Meg Scheffler, M.D., BCM pediatric resident working in Africa.

BIPAI provides learning experiences for over one hundred learners (medical student and residents) per year. Most typically, opportunities are available for two learners per month in each of: Swaziland, Lesotho, Malawi, and Botswana. Learners are financially responsible for their own airfare, ground transport, meals, and incidental expenses. BIPAI provides (shared) housing in-country. Spots typically fill 8-10 months in advance. Interested applicants are encouraged to submit their CV, dates of availability, and country preference (if applicable) to Meg Ferris at mferris@bcm.edu.

PIDS/BIPAI Scholarship program

PIDS/BIPAI travel scholarships are available for a subset of the learners who participate in international elective rotations with BIPAI. The PIDS/BIPAI scholars program is designed to provide an international infectious disease learning opportunity for young health professionals (med students, pediatric residents, or pediatric ID fellows). The PIDS/BIPAI scholars program is generously supported by a grant from the Abbott Fund. Scholars receive fully-paid travel and housing to support a one-month elective experience at one of BIPAI's HIV/AIDS Children's Clinical Centers of Excellence. These Centers of Excellence are located in Botswana, Burkina Faso, Lesotho, Malawi, Swaziland, Uganda, and Romania.

All twelve PIDS/BIPAI scholarships for 2010 have been awarded.  The application period for 2011 PIDS/BIPAI scholarships will run from March 1, 2010 through June 30, 2010.  During the application period for 2011, applicants are encouraged to submit their CV, dates of availability, country preference (if applicable), and a brief personal statement to Meg Ferris at mferris@bcm.edu. The personal statement should describe the applicant's interest in international health and why the applicant would like to pursue the international rotation. Applicants should apply 8-10 months in advance of their proposed trip, and should include the phrase "PIDS/BIPAI scholar application" in the subject line of their e-mail. All applications will undergo review by a PIDS/BIPAI committee.
