Program Update

Clinical care

With support from United States President’s Emergency Plan for AIDS Relief (PEPFAR) through Centres for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), Baylor – Uganda has managed to provide and integrate paediatric HIV/AIDs care and treatment in sixty nine health facilities across the country. Children remain the main focus of the programme, with family members benefiting from the services provided.

So far, over five thousand children are benefiting from services provided and supported by the organisation at the COE and the Post Natal clinic at Mulago Hospital.  In these facilities, mortality rate has significantly reduced from 3.2% to the current 2.8%. Close to three thousand of these are on highly active anti retroviral therapy (HAART).
In the five Kampala suburb satellite clinics supported in collaboration with Kampala City Council (KCC) and the family consortium, 2039 children are in care with 694 on HAART. In Ministry of Health facilities upcountry where Baylor-Uganda works to integrate pediatric care, over 27,000 children and adults have been enrolled. Of these more than 10,000 are on HAART.

Services provided are based on the ten point pediatric HIV/AIDS management plan which involves: HIV testing and counseling, anti retroviral therapy, management of opportunistic infections, home based care and treatment, nutritional support, provision of the basic care package and psychosocial support among others.

Support to upcountry health facilities has continued through mentorship, provision of ARVs and laboratory supplies and support supervision to ensure that services provided are up to the required standard. The table below shows the number of active clients by June 2009 at all Baylor-Uganda supported centres in Kampala and the National Expansion health facilities.
