3. Monitoring Pediatric Antiretroviral Therapy

Monitoring of antiretroviral therapy includes routine clinical and neurodevelopmental evaluations, laboratory testing to monitor for drug toxicity, and virologic and immunologic testing to monitor the activity of the drug regimen. In general, long-term (six months or longer) calculations of weight-growth velocity are more meaningful than short-term fluctuations in weight. Marked changes in plasma HIV concentration or CD4+ lymphocyte count should be confirmed by repeat testing.
