Laboratory-Based Research

Whenever possible, trainees with a declared interest in laboratory-based research are linked to a faculty mentor prior to their arrival in Houston. Postdoctoral trainees come with prior experience and an advanced degree (Ph.D., M.D., or D.D.S.), so their training is predominantly laboratory-based. They participate in departmental literature reviews and seminars and may audit any courses offered in the Graduate School. Trainees participate as presenters at multidisciplinary, multidepartmental journal clubs and have the opportunity to interact with established scientists selected as guest lecturers for departmental seminars.

Each trainee has a defined project related to the major research goals of the laboratory in which the research is conducted. The conduct of the research is under the immediate supervision of the faculty member in charge of the laboratory. During their tenure in the program, trainees are expected and encouraged to develop into independent scientists.
